Birmingham Heritage Week 2026
We’re looking forward to opening the doors of Birmingham Assay Office to the public again as part of Birmingham Heritage Week 2026.
The city-wide initiative has grown year on year and we enjoyed two sell-out tours of the hallmarking floor in 2025.
This year, we will be asking for a £10 donation per ticket, which will go to West Midlands Air Ambulance.
Guests will enjoy a talk on hallmarking and Birmingham Assay Office’s history as one of the oldest institutions in the city, as well as a visit to the operations floor to witness hallmarking in action and meet some of our experts.
Visitors will also be able to see some of our archive collection of Birmingham toys (small goods), jewellery and silverware by notable artists including Matthew Boulton, Nathaniel Mills and Elkington & Co, displayed in our impressive Silver Room.
Birmingham Assay Office is one of the United Kingdom’s four Assay Offices, established in 1773 by an act of Parliament in order to assay (test) and hallmark precious metals.
As a cornerstone of the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter and the wider UK jewellery industry, we offer a range of services beyond hallmarking, including jewellery and watch valuations, luxury authentication, gemmological analysis, and analytical and elemental testing.
Today, Birmingham Assay Office plays a vital role in maintaining consumer trust and upholding industry standards across the jewellery and precious metals sectors.
The Birmingham Heritage Week 2026 programme will be available to browse online from 12 noon on Saturday 8 August, giving visitors a week to explore the programme and plan their visit before bookings open at 10am on Saturday 15 August.
Tours of Birmingham Assay Office will take place on Wednesday 16 September, at 9:30am and 11:00am.
Tickets to visit Birmingham Assay Office will be available here, but will not be visible until 10am on Saturday 15 August.
