The introduction of laser hallmarking in the late 1990s enabled Birmingham Assay Office to offer customers greater flexibility. Customers can vary the size of their hallmark for each job and choose between a relief mark or an outline mark. A relief mark removes the background, leaving the design raised, while an outline mark traces only the lines that form the design.
Laser hallmarking is valued for its consistency, flexibility, and precision. It can be applied to any item that fits within the laser bed and is particularly well suited to finished pieces, as it creates a shallower impression than punch marking.
If you are registering for the first time, you will need to complete a New Customer Form and a Sponsor Registration Form. These forms allow you to specify the outline and the 2–4 initials that will represent your name or business in your sponsor’s mark.
Registration is valid for 10 years and costs £80 + VAT. Setting up a laser file costs £110 + VAT and typically takes 7 working days to generate. Producing a punch costs £110 + VAT and takes approximately 10 working days. If you choose to order both a punch and a laser file at the time of registration, the laser file is available at a reduced rate of £55 + VAT.
