GOLD VOLUMES

The total number of articles hallmarked by the four UK Assay Offices was 12.6% down in the first quarter of 2011 The total number of articles hallmarked by the four UK Assay Offices was 12.6% down in the first quarter of 2011. All metals showed a reduction in volumes hallmarked, including silver which was 11.2% down but still representing 58% of the total units hallmarked in the UK. The decline is undoubtedly a result of the on-going rise in precious metal prices and consumer and retailer confidence being eroded by economic uncertainty and rising fuel and food prices.
