benevolent_logoAMAZING SUPPORT FOR THE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY- THE BIRMINGHAM ASSAY OFFICE STAFF  HOLD A  SUCCESSFUL CHARITY CAR WASH - Added 02.04.08

People in the Trade may not all be aware of the wonderful and mainly unsung work that the registered charity of the British Jewellery Giftware and Finishing Federation, THE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY has been carrying out since 1924.  The Charity supports retired and disadvantaged individuals who once worked in the Jewellery, Giftware and Finishing Industries.

The Birmingham Assay Office Staff organised a highly successful Charity Car Wash on Monday 31st March to raise much needed funds for The Benevolent Society.  The Chief Executive and Assay Master Michael Allchin, agreed to wash several cars - in exchange for a very generous contribution to the Charity.  Other members of staff also washed cars on Monday and went out and about around St Pauls Square and the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham collecting money.

The Car wash took place in the car park of The Birmingham Assay Office, in Newhall Street from 8.00am | 1.00pm.  The Staff of The Birmingham Assay Office have raised £1,000 for The Benevolent Society Charity.

The Staff of The Birmingham Assay Office would like to thank all of its staff, customers, Wardens/Guardians, the staff of the British Jewellers Association, BJA members and members of the public who all gave so generously and made this such a successful day.

If you would like to send in a contribution to help former workers from the Jewellery Trade who now find themselves in need, please make your donation payable to The Benevolent Society and send it to: Penny J. Parkes C/O The Birmingham Assay Office, PO Box 151, Newhall Street, Birmingham, B3 1SB.  Your financial support will make a huge difference.

SUPPORTING RETIRED AND DISADVANTAGED WORKERS FROM THE
JEWELLERY TRADE

History

The Society can trace its roots back to 1924 and although it is often thought that the Welfare State adequately provides for those in need, this is often not the case.  Social evolution also means that items that were once considered a luxury (telephone, televisions, refrigerators) are now regarded as essential for even a basic quality of life.  More and more people own their own home, but find that in old age, they cannot afford to replace essential items, let alone maintain their property.  So, the work of the Benevolent Society grows.

The Society financially assists those who have worked in the industries covered by the six trade Associations within the British Jewellery Giftware and Finishing Federation (BJGF) namely, the manufacture and distribution of jewellery, giftware, brass and copperware, leather goods luggage and allied trades, and the processing or out-work finishing of metal.

How Does the Society Help?

The Society can help in a number of ways | by giving regular grants; providing essential items such as cookers, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, telephone rental, television licence fees, bed linen, household repairs.  Interest-free loans are also granted in some cases.

PLEASE HELP THE BIRMINGHAM ASSAY OFFICE IN ITS SUPPORT OF THIS WORTHWHILE CHARITY

ALL DONATIONS WILL BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED.
