LEARN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SYMBOLS THAT MAKE UP A UK HALLMARK

The Birmingham Assay office has produced a consumer leaflet designed to inform and educate the customers of Britain’s jewellery retailers about the importance and meaning of Hallmarks on precious metals.

The leaflet provides information and explains the significance of all the symbols that make up a hallmark on the recognised ranges of standards for Gold, Silver, Platinum and now Palladium items.  Once understood, the knowledge gained will give anyone the ability to read and understand a hallmark, which in turn results in a better understanding and appreciation of the value of a precious metal item.

Assaying (testing) and Hallmarking of precious metals has existed in this country for over 700 years and is recognised as the earliest form of Consumer Protection.  Today, its role is more vital than ever, especially while the market and prices of precious metals remains unpredictable.

Supplies of the leaflet can be picked up from The Birmingham Assay Office Stand at Spring Fair – The Jewellery Show – Hall 18 Stand K49.  The Hallmarking Consumer leaflet can also be requested by contacting Email: gem@theassayoffice.co.uk or Tel: 0871 871 6020.
