A MATTHEW BOULTON TOUR DE FORCE - Added 09.01.08

tour de forceAt the end of 2007 The Birmingham Assay Office was honoured to host the second AHRC (Arts & Humanities Research Council) funded workshop on the plans for Boulton 2009 celebrations.
In addition to providing a forum for the discussion of ideas for the bicentenary of Matthew Boulton’s death, the workshops are intended to build sustainable partnerships between Heritage providers and Higher Education institutions in the City.

The workshops featured presentations by three experts on Boulton. Sir Nicholas Goodison, author of Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton gave a fascinating account of the ormolu production at the Soho Manufactory. Professor Ken Quickenden of Birmingham City University talked about Boulton’s silver production. Scott Erbes, Curator at the Speed Museum in Kentucky, Louisville, concentrated on the Boulton collection held by the museum which contains many many fine examples of Boulton’s work in silver. Dr. Sally Baggott, Curator chaired the workshop, and said she thoroughly enjoyed the day. “It was a thrill to have such expertise gathered in one room.

Each speaker had something distinctive to say about Boulton and his work, but the three papers worked very well together”.
