Applying The Mark
Appropriate methods
Several different techniques are available for applying the hallmarks, it is important to select the procedure most appropriate for each article. This will depend upon the shape and construction of the item, the quantity to be marked and the size of the hallmark to be applied.

Hand operated or hydraulic presses may be used and large or awkward shaped articles are still "struck" by hand. At the opposite extreme, the latest technology offers laser marking which is particularly suitable for hollow or imported items where customers do not have the opportunity to refinish an article after hallmarking.
When a parcel is ready for marking the requisite punches will be issued to the member of the marking team who has been allocated the work.
The Assay Office has its own toolmaking department which produces hundreds of jigs in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate all types of articles and support them during the marking process. The toolmakers also make the blank hallmarking punches which are then sent to an accredited supplier to have the individual customer's sponsor mark and other hallmarking symbols cut into them.
